ROCK HILL, SC- Michael Patrick scored the go ahead run and hit a two RBI single to lead the Winthrop baseball team past Charlotte 5-2 on Wednesday night. The Eagles are now 17-19 on the season while Charlotte drops to 8-22-1.
Travis Shelley gave up a single hit in four innings to earn the win, while Charlotte’s Corbin Shive gave up three runs on five hits to take the loss. Joey Strain came in to relieve in the ninth inning and pitched a no hitter to get his first save of the season.
The Eagles led off the game with Leighton Daniels singling and then advancing to second on a throwing error by Shive. Luke Maldonado was hit by a pitch and Daniels came home on a single from John Menken. Shive then threw a wild pitch to advance Maldanado to third and he scored as Chad Smith grounded out.
The 49ers scored two unanswered runs with the first coming in the third inning as Brett Lang scored on an RBI single by Mikal Hill and followed with Shive coming home on single from Lang in the fourth inning.
Michael Patrick took the lead back in the fifth inning after scoring on an RBI single by Daniels. Patrick doubled and advanced to third on a beautiful bunt from Kyle Edwards that skated along the first base line.
The Eagles made it 5-2 as Smith and Brad Kaczka scored on a single by Patrick.
The Eagles travel to take on Presbyterian College in a three game conference series. Game times are Friday at 3:00 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
