Rock Hill, SC – The Winthrop women’s tennis team suffered it’s first conference loss of the season to Charleston Southern, 5-2, on Monday afternoon, ending their 8-game winning streak.
The Eagles were formidable in doubles competition, earning the doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles position, Winthrop’s Andressa and Alice Garcia were defeated by Charleston Southern’s Alexandra Walters and Yvonne Hubler, 8-4, but Caitlin Cridland and Ekin Gunaysu captured the No. 2 doubles position for the Eagles, besting Alia Nour and Mi’Kola Cooper, 8-5. The Eagle’s Tijana Uzelac and Beth Williamson were victorious over the Buccaneer’s Marketa Placha and Nicolin Luecke, 8-4, in the No. 3 doubles position.
Winthrop struggled in the singles competition, dropping five of the six matches. In the No. 1 singles position, Andressa Garcia was edged, 7-6, 6-4, by Placha, while Hubler defeated Alice Garcia, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 2 singles position. Walters bested Cridland, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 3 singles position, and Luecke overpowered Uzelac, 6-0, 1-6, 6-1, in the No. 4 singles position. Gunaysu won the only singles point of the day for the Eagles, routing Cooper, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 5 singles position, while Nour prevailed against Monica Aguado in the No. 6 singles position, 6-2, 6-2.
The Eagles overall record now stands at 10-4, and 4-1 in conference. Winthrop will travel to UNC-Asheville for another conference match on Wednesday, April 2nd, at 2 p.m.
