Rock Hill, SC – The Winthrop women’s tennis team secured its first conference victory of the season on Thursday, defeating Presbyterian 7-0. It was the Eagles third victory in a row, and their first since earning the #71 ITA ranking.
The Eagles would start out the day in dominant fashion, winning all three of the doubles matches impressively. In the No. 1 doubles position, Winthrop’s Andressa and Alice Garcia were victorious over Presbyterian’s Greer Ransom and Courtney Gardiner 8-3, while Caitlin Cridland and Ekin Gunaysu prevailed in the No. 2 doubles position, 8-2, against Patricia Alves and Kayla Stanford. Beth Williamson and Tijana Uzelac continued Winthrop’s success, defeating Caroline deLoach and Caroline Ferrari, 8-3, in the No. 3 doubles position.
Winthrop would sweep the singles competition, winning all of the matches in straight sets. In the No. 1 singles position, Andressa Garcia triumphed over Ransom, 6-4, 6-1, and Alice Garcia won in the No. 2 singles position, against Alves, 6-2, 6-4. Cridland defeated Gardiner, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 3 singles position, while Uzelac overwhelmed deLoach, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 4 singles position. In the No. 5 singles position, Gunaysu was victorious over Leahy, 6-1, 6-0, and Monica Aguado continued her strong play at the No. 6 singles position, winning 6-1, 6-0, against Stanford.
The Eagles record is now 5-3 on the season, and 1-0 in conference. Winthrop will travel to Winston-Salem, NC for a match with Wake Forest on Saturday, March 15th, at 12 P.M.
