The Winthrop women’s basketball team will face the second-seeded Duke Blue Devils in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship on Saturday at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, NC. The game between No.15 seed Winthrop and Duke is set for 11 a.m. and will be carried by ESPN 2.
Winthrop (24-8) is making its first NCAA tournament appearance after winning the Big South Conference Championship on March 9 with a 87-74 victory over top-seeded High Point. The Eagles will be facing Duke for the second time in program history. The other meeting came on Dec. 9, 1986 and resulted in an 80-45 Duke victory during Winthrop’s first year as a NCAA Div. I program.
The winner of the Winthrop vs. Duke game will meet the winner of No. 7 Depaul vs. No. 10 Oklahoma game on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the second round. The winner of the second round will advance to the Lincoln, NE regional.
Tickets for the first round game are now on sale at the Winthrop Coliseum and are priced at $30 each. Winthrop is also planning to take a fan bus to the game. Cost of the round trip bus fare is $40 plus the cost of a game ticket.
Winthrop will also broadcast the game on WRHI Radio and on the internet.
