Winthrop Men Battle Liberty in Big South First Round LIVE on WRHI: Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop men’s basketball team finished in a three-way tie for second place in the Big South Southern Division, but earned the fourth seed after the tie-breakers were finished and will play Liberty in the first game of the men’s tournament at noon Wednesday in Myrtle Beach.

The Eagles finished a three-way tie with UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb. UNC Asheville earned the second seed after going 3-1 on the season against Gardner-Webb and Winthrop. Gardner-Webb received the third seed after sweeping the Eagles this season.

Liberty, the defending Big South Champions, earned the fifth seed out of the Big South Northern Division after finishing the season 5-11 in the conference.

Winthrop and Liberty met only once during the regular season on February 4. The Eagles defeated the Flames 73-62 in Lynchburg, VA.

The Eagles and Flames have previously met five times in the Big South Tournament with Winthrop holding a 4-1 edge. The last time they met was in 2010 as the Eagles won 80-72.

The winner of Wednesday’s contest will go on to face the High Point Panthers on Friday at noon, who are the top seed out of the Northern Division, finishing the regular season with a 12-4 Big South mark. High Point defeated Winthrop in the team’s only meeting on February 1.
