Winthrop Baseball Finishes Weekend Series With Coastal Carolina with 11-3 Victory

CONWAY, SC- TJ Olesczuk went three for four on the day, including a pair of RBI doubles, and scored two runs to lead the Winthrop baseball team to an 11-3 win over Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon at Pelicans Park.

The Eagles took two out of three games in the series and are now 11-13 on the season and improve to 4-2 in Big South play, while Coastal drops to 11-12 and 2-4.

Olesczuk, Leighton Daniels and Brad Kaczka combined for seven hits, seven RBIs and five runs.

Josh Strong picked up his first win of the season to run his record to 1-4. He allowed two runs on six hits. Coastal’s Seth Lamando gave up five runs on two hits to take the loss.

Winthrop jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after an Olesczuk RBI double that scored Daniels who led off the game with a walk. Olesczuk stole third before Babe Thomas reached on another walk. Olesczuk scored when Thomas was thrown out at second base in a run down.

Winthrop added three more runs in the second. The Eagles loaded the bases against Lamando. Chad Smith led off the inning with a single and moved to second when Altman reached first on a fielders choice. Kaczka then walked to load the bases. Smith scored the first run of the inning when Daniels’ grounder was mishandled by the second baseman. Clay Altman advanced to second and third. Altman then scored on a wild pitch and Daniels came home on Olesczuk’s second double of the game..

Winthrop added single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to bring the score to 7-2. The Eagles closed out their scoring with four more runs in the eighth inning. Olesczuk was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then scored on a triple by John Menken. Thomas then walked again and Altman followed with a single that advanced Thomas to second. Kaczka then drove Menken and Thomas before Altman scored the final run of the inning on a ground out by Daniels.

The Chants scored their final run in the bottom of the ninth inning when Michael Paez scored on an RBI double from Zach Remillard to bring the final score to 11-3.

The Eagles return home to take on Charlotte this Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at The Winthrop Ballpark.
