Radford, VA – The Winthrop men’s tennis team won its third straight match, defeating Radford, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles established an early lead by winning the doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles position, Winthrop’s Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak were victorious, 8-5, over Radford’s Janken Thoen and Nico Ascarrunz, but the Highlanders captured the No. 2 doubles position, as Nicholas Sayer and Joe Mills edged Steven Patrick and Tremayne Mitchell, 8-7. The Eagle’s Yuta Hirokawa and Michael Chen prevailed, 8-3, against Patrick O’Keefe and Javier Waase, in the No. 3 doubles position, helping Winthrop earn the point.
Winthrop’s strong play carried over to the singles competition, facilitating an Eagles victory. In the No. 1 singles position, Sayer bested Hirokawa, 6-1, 6-3, while the match between Patrick and O’Keefe, in the No. 2 singles position, went unfinished, 6-3, 1-6, 0-3, as the match had been decided. Comerford routed Autones, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 3 singles position, and Mills overpowered Mitchell, 6-0, 6-4, in the No. 4 singles position. In the No. 5 singles position, Juan Pablo Boada was victorious in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, over Waase, and Chen defeated Thoen, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 6 singles position.
The Eagles overall record now stands at 10-7, and 3-0 in conference. Winthrop will host Campbell on Saturday, March 29th, at 1 P.M.
