ROCK HILL, SC–Dequesha McClanahan recorded the second triple-double of her career to lead Winthrop to a 82-56 Big South Conference victory over Campbell on Saturday during Senior Day.
McClanahan scored 25 points, dished out 10 assist and grabbed 11 rebounds and four other Eagles reached double figures in the historical win that set a new Winthrop record for Big South victories. The Eagles closed out the regular season with a 15-5 conference record and are now 21-8 overall. The 15 BSC wins broke last year’s previous high of 14 while the 21 season wins equals last year’s win total. Winthrop will now go for new record when they open Big South Conference tournament play next Friday in Conway, SC. The loss dropped Campbell to 18-11 overall and 13-7 in the league.
Schaquilla Nunn had her 15th double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Erica Williams finished with 17 points. Pamela Decheva came off the bench to score 12 on four three-pointers and the team’s second senior Tiffany Charles closed out her home career with 10 points and tied a career high with eight rebounds. Campbell was paced by 16 points apiece by Roslyn Presley and Kiera Gaines.
Winthrop won the game by turning 22 Campbell turnovers into 27-0 advantage in points off turnovers. The Eagles led 39-27 at halftime as McClanahan had 11 points at the break.
The Eagles increased the lead to 18 as they opened the second half on a 6-0 run to make it a 45-27 game on a layup by Charles. The Camels trimmed the deficit to 11 points at 64-53 with 6:59 left on a layup by RaeChaun Edwards, but Winthrop responded with a vengance by closing out the game on a 18-3 run to win going away.
With the victory, Winthrop will be seeded third in the Big South tournament and will play at 8 p.m. on Thursday against the winner of the Coastal Carolina vs. Charleston Southern game on Tuesday night.
