FARMVILLE, VA – The Winthrop softball team dropped the rubber match of a three-game series to Longwood 9-4 Sunday.
The Eagles are now 16-15 overall on the year and 4-4 in the conference while Longwood improved to 17-6 overall and 6-1 in the Big South.
Winthrop struck first to open the game in the top of the first inning as the Eagles got two-out RBI singles from Mel Andrea and Alex White to put the team up 2-0.
Longwood did not go an inning without scoring as the Lancers put up one in the first, two in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth before the Eagles got back on the scoreboard.
In the top of the fifth, Winthrop got two runners on with two outs and Alex White picked up two more RBI with a double to center field to bring the Eagles within 6-4, but Winthrop couldn’t muster any more offensive production. Longwood tacked on three more runs in the final two innings for the 9-4 victory.
White finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. McKenzie Corn also collected two hits. Sara Allen picked up the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits in four innings of work. Allen’s record fell to 7-6.
The Eagles will return to the diamond on Wednesday with a single conference match at Presbyterian at 3 p.m.
