Compare Foods, based in Charlotte and New York, revealed plans Friday to close its Cherry Road location in Rock Hill. General Manager Omar Jorge cited the store’s closing due to the lack of sales.
“The recession hit Rock Hill pretty hard and we’ve been suffering from that as well,” Jorge said. “There are a lot of businesses that have been dealing with that.”
The Rock Hill store employs about 50 people, most of whom have been transferred to the supermarket’s other nine locations in the Charlotte region. The closest store to Rock Hill will now be on Arrowood Road.
The store opened its doors in 2008 in the space formerly occupied by Winn-Dixie. Nearby, a brand new Publix store will open March 26.
