Raleigh, NC – In their first match as a ranked team this season, the #74 Winthrop men’s tennis team was defeated by #19 North Carolina State, on Friday afternoon, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
The Eagles had trouble out of the gate, dropping the doubles point to the Wolfpack. In the No. 1 doubles position, the #42 ranked doubles pairing of Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster were victorious, 8-1, over Winthrop’s Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak, while North Carolina State’s Sean Weber and Simon Norenius prevailed, 8-2, against Tremayne Mitchell and Juan Pablo Boada in the No. 2 doubles position. Beck Bond and Austin Powell continued North Carolina State’s run with a 8-2 victory over Yuta Hirokawa and Michael Chen, in the No. 3 doubles position.
Winthrop’s troubles continued in singles play, dropping three matches, while one went unfinished. In the No. 1 singles position, #45 ranked Powell was victorious against Hirokawa, 6-1, 6-2, and #91 ranked Mudge defeated Comerford, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 2 singles position. The match in the No. 3 singles position, between #122 ranked Thomas Weigel and Boada went unfinished, 6-2, 5-4, as the match had been decided, and Nick Horton captured the No. 4 singles position against Mitchell, 6-1, 6-2. The No.5 and No. 6 singles matches were not played, as the match had already been decided.
The loss evens Winthrop’s record at 6-6 on the season. The Eagles will welcome Brevard and Elon to Rock Hill for a doubleheader on Friday, March 14th.
