PONTE VEDRA, FL–Winthrop freshman Brad Kauffman recorded his first hole-in-one on Monday as he aced the world famous No. 17 hole at TPC Sawgrass during the first round of the 2014 Sea Best Invitational.
Kauffman (Greenville, SC) used a 50 degree wedge on the 125-yard shot to the famous island green cup. His shot highlighted the opening two rounds which were cut short by darkness. Play will resume at 8 a.m. Tuesday and the final round of the 54-hole event will begin as a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
After 34 holes, Winthrop is tied with Florida for sixth place at 304. North Florida leads the 16-team field with a 4-over 298 while Liberty is six over.
Eagles head coach Kevin Pendley was pleased with his team’s opening round performance considering the weather conditions that have plagued his team since it returned to campus for the spring semester. “We showed some rustiness, but that is to be expected,” he said. “We had some high scores on the par 5s that probably kept us from being in the top three or four at this point. If we can finish in the top five of this field, I will be happy.”
With holes remaining to be played in the second round, here are Winthrop’s individual results:
Zach Seabolt (72, 69 thru 16, +5), Taylor Dickson (72, 64 thru 15, +4), Nick Eberhardt (72, 68 thru 16, +4), Brad Kauffman (72, 71 thru 16, +6), Walt Todd (72, 70 thru 16, +6).
