ROCK HILL, SC – The Eagles men’s tennis team finished off a good week on the court by earning both the Big South Conference Player and Freshman of the Week honors.
Winthrop’s Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, South Africa) has been selected as the Player of the Week, while the Eagles’ Tremayne Mitchell (Johannesburg, South Africa) has been named Co-Freshman of the Week.
Comerford went 4-1 last week against UAB, College of Charleston and Coker College. In doubles play, Comerford paired up with Peter Nagovnak to defeat the Blazers’ Donovan McSeveney and Lucas Dirube, 6-0, in the first flight. The pair also defeated College of Charleston’s Brice Allanic and Charlie Griskey, 6-3, at No. 1 and were leading Coker’s duo of Andre Staab and James Corfield when the doubles point was decided. In singles play, Comerford defeated College of Charleston’s Zack Lewis (6-0, 4-6, 6-1) and Coker’s James Corfield (6-3, 6-0) in the fourth flight. The award marks his first Player of the Week honor this season.
Mitchell went 3-0 in singles play last week for the Eagles. In the No. 5 flight he defeated College of Charleston’s Alon Faiman (6-4, 6-2), Coker’s Martin Moncayo (6-1, 6-2) and UAB’s Mitchell Martell (6-1, 6-5). Mitchell added a doubles victory teaming up with Yuta Hirokawa to best Coker’s William Marrafao and Martin Moncayo.
Comerford, Mitchell, and the Eagles men’s tennis team will be back in action on February 22, in Rock Hill, as they take on South Carolina State, at Memorial Courts.
