If you’ve been frustrated with the detours and road closures throughout downtown Rock Hill, city officials say you’re not alone.

Ongoing construction projects — including infrastructure improvements along East Main and East Black Streets, Elizabeth Lane and Charlotte Avenue have led to numerous detours around the Fountain Park Place project. Across Dave Lyle Blvd., improvements on West White Street to Winthrop University have led to additional closures.

In a luncheon Wednesday with member of the local media, City Manager David Vehaun apologized for the ongoing closures. Vehaun said he knew the road closures would be aggravating, but joked that somehow, “we’ve found a way to make them worse.”

Road work around the Fountain Park Place and Old Town East office complex should be complete within three to four weeks, Vehaun said. Some of the closures are due to the ongoing construction while others are water and sewer system improvements best done while the road is torn up.

Phase two of work along W. White Street is underway now between Laurel Street and Stewart Avenue. Vehaun said that stretch of road will be closed “for some time.”
