The Rock Hill Bearcats won the final three matches to come back and defeat Summerville 28-23 in the AAAA Wrestling State Championship. The Bearcats jumped out to a 15-0 lead behind the strong performances of Jay McNeal, Logan Sexton, Kendrick Mackey, and Noah Mead who all picked up victories to start the contest. But then Summerville fought back to take a 23-18 lead with just three matches remaining. Rock Hill got victories in the 220 and heavyweight classifications from Cameron Bell and Travis Strait, giving Rock Hill a slim 25-23 lead with just the 106 pound match-up left. That set the scene for Devon Faile to be a hero. Faile was faced with the tough task of taking on the #1 ranked 106 pound wrestler in the state of South Carolina, James Sass. The match was tight knight from jumpstreet, but with just second remaining, Faile got a critical takedown to win his weight class and ultimately the state championship. The Bearcats lost 36-21 to Lexington in last year’s state title match, however this time around Rock Hill would not be denied. The win gives Rock Hill its 17th state championship in wrestling and they finish the season with a 43-2 record. Summerville ended the year at 33-2.
