EPA sends notice of violation over sewage discharges into Lake Wylie
The federal Environmental Protection Agency has issued what it calls a Notice of Violation to Utilities Inc for the company’s numerous discharges of wastewater into Lake Wylie in the Tega Cay community.
In a statement today, the EPA notes at least 27 sewer overflows in 2013 that discharged more than 446,000 gallons of untreated sewage.
It says at least 18 of those sent untreated sewage into navigable waters.
The Notice of Violation requires Utilities, Inc. to comply with a Department of Health and Environmental Control consent order sent out February 3.
DHEC gave the company 30 days to fix its sewer problems.
The EPA said should Utilities, Inc. fail to comply with DHEC’s order, the company could be subject to additional enforcement action.
