Three York County Sheriff’s Deputies received Medals of Merit Monday from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department following a shootout at a Fort Mill home in January.

In the early daylight hours of January 7, York County Deputies and a Violent Crimial Apprehension Team from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were serving an arrest warrant on an armed robbery suspect.

During the incident, the suspect ambushed authorities, shooting Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer Shane Page twice. Page has since made a full recovery.

In a statement released Monday by the York County Sheriff’s Office, Lt. Chris Blevins, Master Deputy Jason Powell and Master Deputy Greg Garrison provided cover while trying to get Page to safety.

James Lewis was shot in the leg and treated at Carolinas Medical Center and remains in custody.

“My officers did a fantastic job in this tough situation,” said Sheriff Bruce Bryant. “Their quick thinking and brave actions very well could have been the difference in the situation not becoming a more tragic story.”
