Rock Hill, SC— The Winthrop men’s tennis team was defeated 4-3 by Wofford College on Thursday night in its 2014 season opener at Memorial Courts.
The Eagles competed well in the doubles competition, even though Wofford won two of the three close matches. In the No. 1 doubles position, the Eagles team of Peter Nagovnak and Corey DeCandia came up just short against Rob Galloway and Haris Poric (WOF) in a 6-4 match. However, in the No. 2 doubles match, Winthrop’s Yuta Hirokawa and Tremayne Mitchell had a convincing 6-1 victory over Walker Heffron and Jackson Keith (WOF). Wofford secured a doubles victory, as David Sklar and Trevor Gotkowski won another close match at 6-4, over Steven Patrick and Juan Pablo Boada.
In the singles competition, Winthrop ended up with a 3-3 split with Wofford. Hirokawa defeated Wofford’s Rob Galloway in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, to secure the Eagles victory at the No. 1 singles position. Wofford won the No. 2 singles position, when Winthrop’s Steven Patrick came up just short against Haris Poric 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Juan Pablo Boada (WIN) had a straight sets victory over Jackson Keith, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 3 singles position, and the No. 4 singles position included a victory for Wofford, as Walker Heffron defeated Tremayne Mitchell 6-2, 5-6, 6-3. Peter Nagovnak earned a victory in straight sets at the No. 5 singles position over Trevor Gotkowski 6-4, 6-3, to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead in singles competition. However, Parks Thompson’s win over Corey DeCandia at the No. 6 position (4-6, 6-1, 6-1) was the deciding match.
