The members of the Rock Hill-based 178th Combat Engineer Battalion were honored Saturday during Winthrop University’s basketball double-header at the coliseum.

In its first ever Hoops for Troops event, the university also honored all members of the military, past and present.

The 178th returned in May from its second deployment to Afghanistan.

In addition, spectators coming into the Coliseum were able to give donations to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Before the games, the members of the unit marched and stood at attention on the basketball court, as the crowd cheered and waved small American flags.

“God Bless the USA” played over the PA system, and a video about the 178th’s last deployment appeared on the Jumbotron.
