BUIES CREEK, NC—Campbell’s Roslyn Presley scored the first seven points of overtime and the Fighting Camels held off a late surge by Winthrop to capture a 77-74 Big South Conference victory Thursday night in Gore Arena.

Winthrop’s last two losses have been in overtime as the Eagles fall to 13-6 overall and 7-3 in the conference. Campbell improves to 11-8 and 6-4. The setback drops Winthrop into second place in the league standings as the Eagles will return home Saturday to face Coastal Carolina at 1:00 p.m.

Samiya Wright sent the game to overtime by connecting on a three-pointer from the left wing as the buzzer sounded to tie the game at 68-68 in regulation. Her shot followed by just seven seconds a go-ahead 3-pointer by Campbell’s RaeChaun Edwards.

“It was a great shot by Samiya and a great find by Dequesha,” said Winthrop head coach Kevin Cook. “All losses are tough, but once again I don’t think we should have gotten to that point. We were up one and had a couple of shots and a couple of free throws, but couldn’t convert. We make those and it could have been a different outcome,” he said.

It was the three ball by Campbell that was a big factor in the win. The Fighting Camels connected on 7 of 10 from behind the arc in the first half as they overcame a nine-point deficit to close out the half on a 20-8 run and went to intermission with a 41-38 lead. Winthrop appeared to have things going its way in the first half as it took its largest lead of the night at 30-21 on a layup by Taylor Calvert with 6:31 remaining, but then Campbell got hot by knocking down four 3-pointers in the final three minutes and 52 seconds of the half.

Campbell opened the second with a 13-6 run to take its largest lead of the game at 54-44 with 13:25 left to play, but Winthrop responded with a 9-0 run to make it a one-point game at 54-53 with just under 10 minutes left.

Winthrop capped a 17-6 run over an eight minute and 38 second stretch to take a 61-60 lead on a 17-foot jumper by Dequesha McClanahan with 3:43 remaining in regulation. Two free throws and a jumper in the lane were sandwiched around a layup by Campbell’s Ashley James to put Winthrop up 65-62 with two minutes remaining, but Campbell went on a 6-0 run to go up 68-65 after Edwards nailed the final three-pointer of the night for the Fighting Camels.

Wright tied her season-high with 19 points as she led four Eagles in double figure scoring. Erica Williams finished with 18 while Schaquilla Nunn had her third straight double-double and 26th of her career with 16 points and 13 rebounds. McClanahan also had a double-double, her eighth of the season with 15 points and 10 assists.

Campbell’s Presley led all players in the game with 22 points while James finished with 17, and Janelle Brown had 12 with all of those coming on 3-point baskets. Edwards added 11.

Winthrop lost despite shooting 50 percent from the field on 31 of 62. Campbell was almost as good as it finished at 47 percent (32-67), but it was the three ball that did the Eagles in. Campbell connected on 10 of 21 compared to 4 of 12 by the Eagles from behind the arc.
