At 11:55 a.m., fire crews were called to a home in the Boyd Hill community where neighbors said an explosion rocked their windows.
“I just heard a big loud bang…it wasn’t like any firework…but fire,” said Sherman Marshall, who ran to the house after seeing flames erupted inside.
Family members confirmed to WRHI that Fred Cathcart, 98, died in the blaze while another woman living inside the home was seriously injured.
Rock Hill Fire Battalion Chief Rusty Meyers said the female victim was airlifted to a burn center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
By 1:30 p.m., fire crews had fully extinguished the flames and the York County Coroner’s office arrived.
Myers said an investigation into the blaze is now underway and a cause of the fire has not yet been identified.
