About 170 acres of property directly behind Interstate 77 at the southbound welcome center in York County could become the Lakemont Business Park in about a year.

Tuesday the York County Economic Development Board heard a consultant’s report on the suitability of the property for industrial or commercial development.

York County Economic Development Director Mark Farris says currently the property has two owners.

“We’re working with both of them to develop the parcel of property into a job producing piece of industrial land,” Farris said.

“We have an agreement with them concerning infrastructure development and the fact that the property will remain industrial and commercial.”

Farris says the property also provides fast and easy access to Charlotte-Douglas Airport.

He says an access road to the property will be completed by the spring, and hopes to have what he calls significant development by the fall of 2014.
