Women’s Soccer Hits the Road for Conference Tournament Semi-Final Against Radford Friday Afternoon

ROCK HILL, SC- The 4th ranked Winthrop women’s soccer team will travel to Conway,SC for the 2013 Big South Tournament presented by Musco Lighting Semi-Final against regular season champions No. 1 Radford Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. This will be the 6th time the Lady Eagles have made it to the conference tournament semi-final and have a 1-4-1 record in the game. Radford has participated in the Big South tournament for the last 20 seasons, making it to the semi-finals 12 times and earning a record of 5-5-2 in the semi-final match. The last time these two teams played, Radford edged out Winthrop 2-1 in Virginia.

Winthrop (11-5-2, 7-4-0) is looking for revenge against Radford who ended the Lady Eagles’ season last year with a 1-0 victory in the conference tournament final. Winthrop advanced to the semi-final game when they took down the No.5 seed Coastal Carolina on penalty kicks. Winthrop’s offense continues to be headed by the efforts of junior Krystyna Freda who was named the Big South Offensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row. She has a career- high 17 goals this season, 7 of them being game-winners, breaking the previous conference record for career game winning goals (17) and tying the conference record for single season game winning goals (7). Red-shirt sophomore goalkeeper Amelia Henderson is coming off of a big game against Coastal, making a career-high 14 saves and stopping two of Coastal’s penalty kicks.

Radford nabbed the regular season conference championship with a 14-2-1 record and being 10-1 in conference play. Radford is coming off a 2-0 victory over the No.8 seed Charleston Southern last Friday night. Freshman Melanie Preistley is leading the way for the Highlanders offensively with seven goals, the most goals scored by a freshman since senior Julie Ruh’e scored seven in her first year. Goalkeeper Che’ Brown was the Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Year for the third time in a row finishing the year with a .62 goals against average. Senior Sydney Golden, another Big South All- Conference first team award winner, has scored six goals this year, four of them game winners.

The winner of this game will take on the winner of the semi-final match between High Point and Liberty and play Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. for the tournament championship and a bid to the NCAA tournament.
