ROCK HILL, SC–Winthrop’s women battled back on Sunday from a 10-shot deficit, but came up two shots short of tying Boise State for the for the 2013 Winthrop Intercollegiate championship which was held at the Rock Hill Country Club.
The event closes out the fall portion of Winthrop’s 2013-14 schedule.
The Eagles shot the low team score of the day as they finished at 311 and had a 36-hole total of 627 on the par 72, 6,044-yard layout. Boise State shot 319 after opening the tournament on Saturday with 306. The Broncos held off the charge by Winthrop thanks to the play of Samantha Martin who shot 152 (73-79) to capture tourney medalist honors by one shot over four other golfers who finished at 153.
Winthrop senior Meagan Wallace (Charlotte, NC) and junior Viivi Nuorti (Helsinki, Finland) were among the four second place finishers. Wallace had rounds of 77-76 while Nuorti shot 76-77. Also finishing second and joining the Winthrop duo on the All-Tournament Team was Taylor Dodson from Gardner-Webb and Boise State’s Oceane Pelloille.
Also finishing in the top 10 for Winthrop was freshman Louise Jeppesen (Vken, Sweden) who tied for ninth place at 159 (79-80). Juniors Jennifer Dilger (Palmdale, CA) and Rachel Wyatt (Blythewood, SC) tied for 17th at 163. Both players shot identical rounds of 84 and 79 for the tournament.
