ROCK HILL, SC—Nine members of the Winthrop men’s and women’s cross country teams will be competing in the 2013 NCAA Division I Southeast Regional on Friday afternoon in Charlottesville, VA.
A total of 600 male and female runners (300 each) from 53 universities located in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Kentucky will compete for the chance to advance to the national championship on Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, IN. Panorama Farms in Charlottesville will be the host site for Friday’s event. The men’s race is scheduled to start at noon followed by the women at 1:00 p.m.
Winthrop cross country coach Ben Paxton says he will take three members of the men’s squad (Colby Coulter, Ellis Coe and Blake White) and six women’s runners (Jeanne Stroud, Tristan Langley, Shayna Jenkins, Jessica Whitmire, Sarah Devaux, and Lisa Nichols) to the regional meet.
The top five runners who are not members of the winning and runner-up teams will receive invitations to compete in the national championship. Paxton believes Stroud can contend for one of the five women’s at-large berths as she continues to get stronger each week after recovering from an early season injury. Stroud (Charleston, SC) finished eighth two weeks ago in the Big South Conference Championships.
