Senior Maddie Simpson and redshirt-freshman Savannah Angel of the High Point University volleyball team both earned Big South Conference weekly honors, the league announced on Monday. Simpson was named the Big South Co-Player of the Week while Angel was named Freshman of the Week for a league-leading fourth time this season.
Simpson led off the weekend against Charleston Southern with a double-double of 72 assists and 18 digs. Simpson’s 72 assists in the match were a new Big South single-game record. She followed her record setting performance with 58 assists and matched her career-best with six blocks, including combining for the game-winning block assist with fellow senior Michelle Chakirelis on senior day against Coastal Carolina.
Angel hit .357 with 14 kills and three blocks in HPU’s win on Friday night. The middle blocker returned on Saturday to post a career-high 16 kills along with a .520 attack percentage in the Panthers’ five-set win over Coastal Carolina.
Angel leads all Big South freshmen with 17 solo blocks this year and 74 total blocks. She is also seventh in kills by a freshman with 163 on the season and has a .320 attack percentage.
This was the fourth time this season that Angel has been selected as Freshman of the Week and the first recognition this season for Simpson. The Panthers’ have garnered several other weekly honors this season with sophomore Annemarie Chin twice being named Defensive Player of the Week in September and junior Kristin Heldt earning Big South Player of the Week in October.
High Point finished the regular-season with a 15-14 overall record and 9-5 mark in conference play. HPU earned the No. 3 seed for the Big South Tournament in Clinton, S.C. and will face No. 6 Winthrop on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the quarterfinals match.
