ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop senior Achille Obougou has been named to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men’s Soccer Third Team.
Obougou was a key component to the men’s soccer program the last two seasons and this year tied for the team lead in scoring with 23 points with 10 goals and three assists. He becomes just the third men’s soccer player in the program’s history to be voted to the Academic All-America Team through CoSIDA. It’s the third straight year Winthrop has had a player named to one of the Capital One Academic All-America Teams as Matt Horn was voted to the first team in 2011 and Alex Isern to the first team in 2012.
The Barcelona, Spain native has a 3.58 grade point average while majoring in biology and is on track to graduate in May of 2014.
Obougou earned All-Big South Conference Second Team honors as well as being named to the Big South Academic Team. He was also selected All-Big South Second Team by College Sports Madness. He finished his two-year career with the Eagles scoring 17 goals and dishing out six assists for 40 points in 37 career games.
