ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop men’s soccer goalkeeper Guilherme Avelar was named the Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Avelar played in just one game last week as he finally returned from injury to help the Eagles earn a much needed victory over Radford on Saturday. The junior tied his career-high of eight saves to record his third shutout of the season and help the Eagles remain in the hunt for a spot in the Big South Conference Championship. He made a couple of big tough saves to keep Radford off the board and help the Eagles to their 10th win of the season and the 400th in the program’s history. Avelar had not seen any action since leave in the first half of the game at High Point on Oct. 19.
He is now 8-3-1 on the year with a 1.10 goals against average, which is third best in the Big South.
