ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop women’s soccer team will travel to take on top-seeded Radford University Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Cupp Stadium. The Lady Eagles look to take down the Highlanders who lead the all time series 4-6-1, and who ended the Lady Eagles season last year with a 1-0 win in the Big South Conference tournament final.
Winthrop (11-3-1, 7-2) had a strong showing in their matchup against Liberty on Wednesday night, where they defeated the Lady Flames 3-1. Junior Krystyna Freda added two more goals to her resume, including her 7th game winning goal of the season which ties the current conference single-season record for game winning goals. She continues to rank in the top 5 in the nation for goals per game (1.071) and points per game (2.43). Sophomore Taylor Walton also got on the board against Liberty, putting away her 5th goal of the season and tying Taylor Coleman for second in goals for Winthrop. The Winthrop defense also had a strong performance this week with freshman Lauren Watts earning an assist and clearing a ball off the line to secure the win for the Lady Eagles.
Radford (12-2-1, 8-1 Big South) had their first conference loss of the year on Wednesday against Coastal Carolina, ending a 25 game conference win streak for the Highlanders who are ranked 6th in the nation in win percentage (.893). Thirteen different players have scored for Radford this season with seniors Sydney Golden and Sahar Aflaki and freshman Britney Kendall leading the team with five a piece. Senior Che’ Brown leads the conference with a .66 goals against average while earning five shutouts this season.
Ben Sohrabi has been with the Highlanders for 18 seasons, earning a record of 187-133-33, 76-40-15 Big South during his tenure.
