Winthrop Volleyball Continues Big South Action At UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb This Weekend

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop volleyball team returns to the court this weekend with a pair of road games at UNC Asheville Friday and Gardner-Webb Saturday.

Winthrop has had a week off since dropping its last conference match at Presbyterian 3-0. The Eagles currently sit at 1-2 in the conference with a 10-7 overall mark.

Alina Sopizhuk, after her performance against the Blue Hose, now leads the Eagles overall with 202 kills followed closely by Irene Ojukwu with 194 and Rachel Lenz with 182. Jessie Vicic continues to lead the Big South in assists per set with 11.58 and currently has 764 assists, well on her way to a spot in the single-season top 10 for Winthrop.

The Eagles will meet the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville at 7 p.m. Friday evening inside the Justice Center. UNC Asheville is 10-8 overall with a 1-2 Big South record. The Bulldogs are coming off a pair of losses last weekend on the road to Radford and Liberty. The team’s lone conference victory came over Gardner-Webb.

Christine Lakatos and Anna Moore are the top two hitters for the Bulldogs, totaling 207 and 196 kills respectively while Moore also sports a .338 hitting percentage. Katie Davis is the team’s primary setter, averaging just over 10 assists per set which ranks her second in the Big South behind Vicic. The Bulldogs have been solid defensively this season as they rank second in the conference in digs, averaging more than 17 per set and third overall in blocks.

Gardner-Webb will host Presbyterian on Friday before hosting the Eagles at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Gardner-Webb is 10-10 overall on the season and 2-1 in the conference. The Bulldogs picked up a 3-0 mid-week victory over Davidson and won their last two conference matches on the road over Radford and Liberty.

The Bulldogs have been led by Erin Anderson and Emily Holte who have totaled 205 and 190 kills respectively. Heather Feldman is the team’s primary setter, averaging just shy of 10 assists per set. Gardner-Webb has struggled at the net defensively as they are at the bottom of the conference in blocks, averaging just1.54 per set.

After the weekend road swing, the Eagles still have two more road games to close out their six-match road trip. Winthrop will head to High Point and Campbell next Friday and Saturday.
