Redshirt-freshman Savannah Angel of the High Point University volleyball team was named the Big South Conference Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week and the third time this season, the league announced on Monday.
Angel tallied a career-high 15 kills while hitting .414 with five blocks in the Panthers win at Campbell on Friday. Angel performed better as the match progressed, including five kills on nine swings in the final frame. Her 15th kill came on match-point to give HPU the four-set victory over the Camels.
The middle blocker is hitting .500 with 2.57 kills per set and 1.36 blocks per set over the Panthers last four matches. She currently ranks fourth in conference play with a .336 attack percentage and leads all Big-South freshman with 10 solo blocks and 60 total blocks.
This was the third time this season that Angel has been selected as Freshman of the Week. Junior Kristin Heldt and sophomore Annemarie Chin have also been garnered conference honors this year. Heldt was named Big South Player of the Week on Oct. 14 while Chin has twice earned Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 16 and Sept. 30.
High Point continues its current five-game road trip this weekend with matches against UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb. HPU and UNC Asheville will play on Friday at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Panthers will take on GWU at 5:00 p.m. High Point is currently tied with Gardner-Webb for third place in the conference with identical 5-3 marks in league play.
