ROCK HILL, SC–Winthrop senior guard Dequesha McClanahan has received another preseason honor as College Sports Madness has picked her on its 2013-14 Mid-Major Preseason All-American Second Team.
McClanahan (Oak Ridge, TN), a 5-8 point guard, was named the Big South Conference Preseason Player of the Year during Thursday’s Big South Basketball Media Day in Myrtle Beach. She has captured the 2012 and 2013 Big South Player of the Year awards after leading the league the past two years in scoring and assists. College Sports Madness named her to its 2013 Mid-Major All-American Fourth Team after she led the Eagles to a 21-12 record and a win in the Women’s Invitational Tournament.
She is closing in on the Winthrop all-time scoring and assist records, and is within striking distance of becoming the all-time scoring leader in Big South Conference history. McClanahan needs just nine more points to become the career scoring leader in Winthrop women’s history and is 70 assists from setting that mark as well. With 464 more points, she will become the Big South all-time scoring leader.
The College Sports Madness list also includes three players, including the Mid-Major Preseason Player of the Year Jasmine Newsome of Tennessee-Martin, who will face Winthrop this season. Newsome’s running mate at guard, Heather Butler, is on the third team. Winthrop faces UT-Martin in the opening game of the 2013 RMU Thanksgiving Classic at Robert Morris University on Nov. 29. Davidson guard Laura Murray was named to the fourth team. The Eagles will travel to Davidson for a Nov. 15 game.
Coach Kevin Cook will send the 2013-14 Eagles into action on Sunday, Nov. 10, when Winthrop hosts College of Charleston on Homecoming Sunday. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
