ROCK HILL, SC–The Eagle men’s tennis team dominated the Winthrop Fall Shootout round robin format by capturing four of the seven singles flights and two out of three doubles flights this past weekend at Memorial Courts.
Winthrop’s winners in the singles flights included junior Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, S. Africa) at No. 1; junior Peter Nagovnak (Kraubeth, Austria), No. 4; sophomore Steven Patrick (Knoxville, TN), No. 5; and sophomore Corey DeCandia (Adelaide, Australia), No. 6. The Winthrop doubles team of sophomore Juan Pablo Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) and DeCandia captured the No. 2 flight while Patrick and senior Yuta Hirokawa (Nigata, Japan) claimed the No. 3 flight.
Comerford battled for three wins at No. 1 singles. He won his first match (1-6, 6-4, 6-4) over Blemont’s Mauricio Antun and followed that with another tough win (6-3, 3-6, 6-4) over Yvon Haessig of USC -Upstate , and then captured another grinder over Chattanooga’s Pasha Grigorjevs (3-6, 7-5, 6-1). Nagovnak opened with a win over Henrik Claesson of Belmont (6-4, 7-5) and then downed USCU’s Carlo Tajes (6-0, 3-1 ret.) before winning the flight over UTC’s Luke Saunders (6-1, 6-0). Patrick won his three matches to take the No. 5 singles as he downed Belmont’s Martijn Verberne (6-2, 6-1), Wofford’s Walker Heffron (6-2, 6-2) and UTC’s Gino Delavalle (5-7, 6-1, 6-2). DeCandia took out Belmont’s Hans Nrdelli (6-1, 6-1), Graham Duncan of Wofford (6-1, 1-0 ret.), and UTC’s John Peacey (6-4, 5-7, 6-4).
In doubles, Boada/DeCandia defeated Belmont (8-1), USC-Upstate (8-6) and UTC (8-6). The Winthrop team of Hirokawa/Patrick defeated the teams from Belmont (8-6), Wofford (8-1) and UTC (by default).
The Winthrop men will return to action this weekend when they travel to Spartanburg for the Wofford Fall Classic.
