BURLINGTON, IA–The Winthrop men’s golf team turned in its best performance at the 54-hole Golfweek Conference Challenge with a 1-under par 287 and finished tied for sixth place in the 15-team tournament held at the Spirit Hollow Golf Course and hosted by the University of Iowa.
Tuesday’s final round performance gave the Eagles three straight sub-300 rounds in the tournament which was captured by Oklahoma by four shots over second place Virginia Tech. Winthrop finished with a tournament score of 11-over 875 (295-293-287) to tie with Iowa. Oklahoma shot 7-under 857 while the Hokies were the only other team to finish under par at 3-under 861.
Winthrop’s heralded freshman Zach Seabolt (Raleigh, NC) was the top finisher for the Eagles as he fired a final round 69 to finish in a tie for 13th place at 216 (73-74-69). Sophomore Nick Eberhardt (Fort Mill, SC) entered the final 18 holes just one shot back of the leader and tied for second place, but came home with a 76 to finish tied for 24th place at 218 (75-67-76).
Junior Taylor Dickson (Gastonia, NC) tied for 29th with a score of 220 (71-73-76). Junior Transfer Sam Whitehead (Milton Keynes, England) finished strong and tied for 42nd place at 224 (76-79-69). Closing out the Winthrop performers was redshirt freshman Weston Bell (Piedmont, SC) who tied for 59th place at 230 (77-80-73).
Winthrop will be back in action this weekend when it travels to Daufuskie Island, SC for the Rees Jones Intercollegiate. Play begins Sunday and finishes on Tuesday.
