ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop sophomore defensive midfielder Magnus Thorsson has been named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, announced Monday morning.
Thorsson helped the Eagles to a 2-0-1 mark last week with all three games away from home and keeping the team unbeaten through five games on the year at 4-0-1.
The 6-1 defensive midfielder out of Reykjavik, Iceland finished the week with a goal and an assist over the weekend to help guide Winthrop to victories over Mercer (2-1) and Stetson (5-1) as he was named the Most Valuable Player of the Mercer Classic.
In the win over Mercer, Thorsson’s corner kick in the 2nd minute was flicked on by Mason Lavallet and then directed into the back of the net by Achille Obougou. On Sunday Thorsson got the scoring started for the Eagles with his first goal of the season in the 7th minute as he placed a shot into the top right corner of the goal.
He played all 110 minutes in the team’s 0-0 draw at East Tennessee State on Sept. 9 and played every second of the games over the weekend as well.
This is Thorsson’s first national team of the week honor for any publication and he is one of three Big South Conference players named to the team this week. The last player named to CSN National Team of the Week was Matt Lacey on Nov. 17, 2008.
