Redshirt-freshman Savannah Angel of the High Point University volleyball team was named the Big South Conference Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday. Angel recorded 16 kills and 14 blocks in four games for the Panthers.
The middle blocker set a new career-best with five blocks in back-to-back matches against Murray State and Davidson at the HPU Classic this weekend. She also posted five kills and two blocks in the Panthers opening win over North Carolina A&T. Angel averaged 1.33 blocks per set during the tournament.
On the week, Angel averaged 1.17 blocks per set and 1.33 kills. She recorded a career-high seven kills and added two blocks against VCU on Tuesday night.
Angel leads all Big South freshman this season with six solo blocks and sits third in the conference in total blocks by a freshman with 32.
High Point is 5-9 on the season and will travel to Greensboro, N.C. on Wednesday, Sept. 25 to take on UNCG. The Panthers will return home Friday, Sept. 27 to open up conference play against Campbell at 7 p.m. in the Millis Center.
