Men’s Golf Team Trails By 6 Shots After Opening Round of Golfweek Conference Challenge

BURLINGTON, IA–Winthrop’s men find themselves in sixth place after the opening round of the 2013 Golfweek Conference Challenge that was completed Sunday evening at the Spirit Hollow Golf Course. The Eagles shot a 7-over par round of 295 in their first tournament of the fall and trail first-round leader Houston by six strokes heading into the second round on Monday.

Winthrop junior Taylor Dickson (Gastonia, NC) shot a 1-under 71 and is tied with seven other players in third place, two shots behind leader Tyler Merkel of Ball State who holds a one-shot lead over New Mexico’s Victor Perez.

Freshman Zach Seabolt (Raleigh, NC) shot a 1-over 73 in his first collegiate round and is tied with nine other players for 18th place. Sophomore Nick Eberhardt (Fort Mill, SC) is tied for 37th after turning in a round of 75. Sam Whitehead (Milton Keynes, England), a junior transfer, is tied for 46th place with a 76 while redshirt freshman Weston Bell (Piedmont, SC) opened with a 77 and is tied for 52nd place.

The Golfweek Conference Challenge is being hosted by the University of Iowa and includes a field of 15 schools representing a dozen NCAA Div. I conferences. The complete team standings after Day 1 are as follows:
