ROCK HILL, SC–The Winthrop men’s golf team finished tied for ninth place and freshman Zach Seabolt claimed third place in the 2013 Rees Jones Invitational that concluded Tuesday afternoon at the Haig Point Golf Club on Daufuskie Island.
Winthrop shot a 301 in the final round of the 54-hole event, the third lowest total of the day, to move up two spots in the final standings into a tie with Troy at 909. Seabolt (Raleigh, NC) continued his strong play as he fired a 71 on Tuesday and finished at 1-over 217 (77-69-71). His round of 71 tied for the lowest score of the day. He now has two top 10 finishes in his first two collegiate events.
Kennesaw State overcame South Florida on the final day to win the team championship. KSU overcame a four-shot deficit as it shot 298 on Tuesday and finished with 885 (290-297-298). USF ended in a two-way tie with South Carolina, the host school, at 887. Chase Koepka of South Florida shot 4-under 212 to capture the medalist honor.
Winthrop’s other finishes are as follows: Taylor Dickson, 41st at 232 (76-76-80); Bradley Kauffman, tied for 42nd at 233 (75-81-77); Sam Whitehead and Nick Eberhardt, tied for 44th at 234. Whitehead had rounds of 80-77-77 while Eberhardt shot 79-79-76.
Winthrop will return to action on Oct. 21-22 when it travels to Kennesaw, GA for the Pinetree Intercollegiate.
