ATHENS, GA–The Winthrop doubles team of sophomore Juan Pablo Boada and senior Yuta Hirokawa finished as the Division II doubles runner-up at the 2013 Southern Intercollegiate Championships that were completed on Monday at the Dan Magilll Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia.
Boada (LaPaz, Bolivia) and Hirokawa (Nigata, Japan) defeated the brother combination of Arnav and Arsav Mohanty of Mercer, 8-5 in the semi-final match before falling to the College of Charleston duo of Rodrigo Encinas and Josh Record, 8-4, in the championship.. Along the way the Winthrop duo won matches over Brent Lett and Christian Harris of Clemson (8-5); Conner Huertas and Sebastian Yllera of East Tennessee (8-7), and Mitchell Martell and Donovan McSeveny of UAB (8-5).
In singles action, four Eagles advanced to the round of 32 before falling. In Div. I singles, Comerford defeated Furman’s Matt Browne, 6-4, 6-4 while Boada advanced over Mark Verryth of Georgia Gwinnett who withdrew. Both players fell in the second round as Comerford lost to Austin Smith of Georgia, 7-6(4), 6-4, and Boada went down to Beck Pennington of Kentucky, 6-0, 6-7, 6-2.
In Div. II singles, Nogovnak defeated Tennessee’s Colton Norton, 6-1-6-1, and Hirokawa knocked out Aleks Mitric of Murray State, 6-1, 6-4 in the second round. Both players lost their next matches in the Round of 32 as Nogovnak fell to Aaron Gomez of Virginia Tech, 6-3, 6-3, and Hirokawa was defeated by Forrest Edwards of Charlotte, 6-4, 6-0.
