PINEHURST, NC—Winthrop men’s golfer Taylor Dickson has qualified for the United States Amateur Championship that will be played Aug. 12-18 at The Country Club in Brookline, MA.
Dickson, from Gastonia, NC, earned his spot into the championship by defeating Josh Nichols on the second hole of a playoff after both finished -5 after the two qualifying rounds at the Country Club of Whispering Pines (Pines) in Whispering Pines, NC.
“Very proud of Taylor for qualifying for the U.S. Amateur,” said Winthrop head men’s golf coach Kevin Pendley. “He has had a very good summer and is starting to show a lot of the potential he has. It’s great for the program to have our players represented at this great event but even better for him as he continues his development. I could not be more excited for him!”
The rising junior shot a 67 in the first round and an even par 72 for a two-day total of 139 as Nichols posted a 72 in the first round and a 67 on Wednesday. In his opening round, Dickson started off with nine straight pars to go out in 36 and then birdied six of the nine holes coming in for a 31 and a 5-under 67. He finished the 36 holes with 21 pars, 10 birdies, and five bogeys.
