ROCK HILL, SC – Winthrop volleyball first-year head coach Bruce Atkinson has announced that the 2013 Eagles will play a 29-match schedule including 15 matches at home, 14 Big South matches and four tournaments.
The 2012 squad finished 14-16 overall and 8-6 in conference and fell to Presbyterian in the first round of the Big South Tournament.
“We are looking forward to our 2013 season and feel that our non-conference schedule will help us prepare for conference play,” Atkinson said. “The team is excited to get into the gym and start training for what will definitely be an exciting season.”
The new-look Eagles have only one returning player and will open the season by hosting the Winthrop Classic August 30-31. Tennessee Tech, Fordham and Savannah State will come to the Winthrop Coliseum.
After a non-conference home contest against NC A&T on September 3, the Eagles will play in three more tournaments. Winthrop will play in the Big Orange Bash at Clemson Sept. 6-7 where they will meet the Tigers, South Carolina and Furman. The Eagles will then take a west coast trip to the Banker’s Classic Sept. 13-14 hosted by the University of the Pacific where Winthrop will take on Pacific, San Jose State and UC-Riverside.
Winthrop returns home Sept. 20-21 to host Bethune-Cookman, UNC Wilmington and The Citadel in the Winthrop Invitational. The Eagles kick off conference play Sept. 27 by hosting Coastal Carolina followed by Charleston Southern on Sept. 28.
October starts for the Eagles with a non-conference road contest at Davidson on October 1. Winthrop then takes a five-match conference road swing at Presbyterian (Oct. 4), UNC Asheville (Oct. 11), Gardner-Webb (Oct. 12), High Point (Oct. 18) and Campbell (Oct. 19). The Eagles close out October with two home conference matches against Radford on Oct. 25 and Liberty on Oct. 26.
Conference play continues on the road to start November at Charleston Southern Nov. 2 and Coastal Carolina Nov. 3. Winthrop hosts Gardner-Webb on Nov. 8 and UNC Asheville Nov. 9. The UNC Asheville match will be a doubleheader with the men’s basketball team for Homecoming with the volleyball match starting at 1 p.m. and the basketball game at 4 p.m.
Winthrop closes its season with a non-conference road match at The Citadel on Nov. 12 before hosting its final match against Presbyterian on Nov. 15
The 2013 Big South Tournament will be hosted in Clinton, SC by Presbyterian Nov. 21-24.
