Newberry Native Codi Lester was the winner in Friday’s Texaco Country Showdown on the campus of USC-Lancaster.

Lester, who plays the guitar, says she started songwriting as a child and continue to do so today.

As the local contest winner, she automatically advances to the North-South Carolina Regional to be held later this fall. Local winners from OTS Media’s contests in Fort Mill, Rock Hill and York will also advance to the state level. The winner of the bi-state competition advances to a regional stage in December.

“That would be wonderful,” Lester says of the opportunity to advance to the state or regional level. “Anytime I win something I never take it for granted. It’s a blessing.”

Lester competed in the July 2012 showdown, also held on the school’s Lancaster campus.
