A $23 million expansion is underway at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia; set to be completed by April 2014.

The additions, partially paid with private and public funds, include an observatory, planetarium and a 4-D movie theater that museum spokesman Tut Underwood said will give the museum a lot of versatility.

Underwood says part of the expansion includes a huge 1926 telescope he says is a wonderful magnificent instrument.

Underwood says the expansion will also include what he calls a bigger and better museum store.

He says the expansion is being funded through a 50/50 public-private partnership.
