A ruptured water line Wednesday afternoon is expected to create major delays for the afternoon rush hour.

S.C. Department of Transportation Assistant District Traffic Engineer Victor Edwards said all westbound lanes of S.C. 161 between Mt. Gallant and India Hook roads are currently closed. The rupture is near the former site of the Wing King.

Currently, crews are inside a 12-foot deep hole beneath the road investigating the source of the water break. Edwards says a sinkhole has also developed under one westbound lane.

All traffic is advised to use an alternate route, taking exit 82 B to Cherry Road and turning right onto SC-5 towards York.

Edwards could not determine when the leak is expected to be fixed.
