If you’re hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend, take comfort in the fact that South Carolina has the lowest gas prices in the nation.

AAA-Carolinas says the average price of a gallon of gas in South Carolina is $3.24 a gallon, down 38 cents from peaking in late February.

The motor club says roughly half a million South Carolinians are expected to travel more than 50 miles this weekend.

“Lower gas prices and a slowly improving economy means more people will travel this holiday weekend to spend time with family and friends,” said David E. Parsons, president and CEO of AAA Carolinas. “This weekend’s favorable weather forecast will also encourage many last-minute travelers to get away for Memorial Day.”

Charleston has the state’s highest gas prices at $3.30, while the lowest prices are in Spartanburg at $3.20.
