Retiring Winthrop University President Anthony DiGiorgio says he wants the school he’s headed for 24 years to be infused in Rock Hill and not be a gated community.

DiGiorgio spoke during Wednesday’s State of the Community Breakfast.

DiGiorgio told those gathered at the Rock Hill Country Club that there’s every opportunity for a major active adult community within site of Winthrop.

DiGiorgio says serious consideration needs to be given to a fixed rail streetcar that can run between Cherry Road and downtown Rock Hill.

DiGiorgio says he’s talking about a revolution in economic development.

He is also endorsing a full-service hotel in the downtown East area with about 125 beds to serve guests who visit Winthrop 2-3 day conferences.
