Charlotte Knights Stadium in Fort Mill will officially be changing hands after the first of the year.
York County Council Monday gave the green light to a plan to sell the 32-acre facility to the Cato Corporation which has already purchased 250 acres surrounding the site with plans for a future development.
York County Economic Development Director Mark Farris is pleased with the plan to sell the last bit of land after the Knights’ $1 per-year lease ends December 31.
Cato will pay $844,000 for the property. County documents show Cato plans to invest $36 million into a new distribution center and later invest another $450 million into a mixed-use development.
York County Councilman Michael Johnson represents the Fort Mill District.
The land Knights Stadium is built on was donated to the county nearly more than two decades ago.
The Charlotte Knights will open their 2014 season at BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte in April 2013.
