Three people died Monday morning in a collision involving a school bus on Old Richburg Road at Lizzie Melton Road in Chester County.

Around 11:40 a.m. Monday, LCpl. Billy Elder of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said a man driving a 1999 Volkswagen heading westbound ran off right side of Old Richburg Road, striking a tree.

That’s when, Elder said, a bus driving eastbound was struck by debris from the incident.

The driver of the Volkswagen and two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Elder said two students were on board the school bus at the time, driven by a Fort Lawn woman. Elder said the students were not transported to the hospital.

Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker said the identities of the deceased were not immediately available.

The wreck occurred 4.2 miles west of Richburg.
