It was a deadly weekend on South Carolina’s Roads.
Between midnight Friday and midnight Tuesday, 12 people lost their lives on palmetto state highways in 10 fatal crashes.
An additional fatality was reported in an early morning hit-and run today in Greenville County.
During the same time period last year, eight people died in eight separate crashes.
State officials say the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the 100 Days of Summer due to the influx of additional traffic across the state and Bike Weeks.
“Our goal right now is to achieve Target Zero traffic deaths by approaching traffic safety from every angle,” said S.C. Department of Public Safety Director Leroy Smith. “We have had a promising start to the year and we want to see that trend continue through the busy summer travel months, but that means we cannot get complacent.”
