BUIES CREEK, NC– The Lady Eagles tennis team outlasted conference foe Campbell 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Eagles improve thier perfect conference record to 5-0 and advance their overall record to 10-9. Campbell falls to 7-11 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
In doubles play, the Lady Eagles got off to a quick start with a win in the No. 3 position by sophomore Ekin Gunaysu (Ankara, Turkey) and Cailtlin Cridland (Perth, Australia) over Campbell’s Ewa Telenga and Lourdes Ros, 8-0. At No. 2 doubles senior Giovanna Portioli (Curitiba, Brazil) and freshman Alice Garcia (Brasilia, Brazil) triumphed over Ana Maria Ortiz and Natasha Afridi 8-4. Senior Yasmine Alkema (Algiers, Algeria) and junior Andressa Garcia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) lost to Karolina Chernaya and Tamara Stanic 5-8 at No. 1 position.
In singles action, freshman Tijana Uzelac (Belgrade, Serbia) defeated Lourdes Ros 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot. The Lady Eagles won the next point at No.5 with Ekin Gunaysu beating Ewa Telenga by the same score 6-2, 6-0. Giovanna Portioli clinched the match with her decisive win over Ana Maria Ortiz 6-4, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, Caitlin Cridland defeated Natasha Afridi in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Big South freshman of the week, Alice Garcia got a win over Tamara Stanic 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. In the No. 1 position, Andressa Garcia came up short in a tough match against Karolina Chernaya 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7).
The Lady Eagles have a busy weekend upcoming as they return home to face three opponents over the weekend. Winthrop will play Big South newcomer Longwood at 11:30 am on Saturday, April 6th and then play South Alabama later that day at 4:00 pm. The Lady Eagles will play Big South foe UNC Asheville at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 7th. All matches will be held at Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts this weekend.
